Welcome to Cynosure! Don't forget to sign our guestbook!
Here is a brief synopsis of the "code of conduct" people who join this website are expected to follow. It's simple: be respectful of others, and feel free to be yourself.
For those who need more rules/details, read on:

Cynosure is a BBS for those sixteen and over-if you'd like me to consider an exception, ask.
For quite a long time this site was "closed"-everyone here was here by invitation only. That policy was later reversed-in essence, a person can now "invite" themselves. So the question is: should you join?
Why not? If you feel you can abide by the Terms of Service and rules given here (by the way these rules are not all inclusive, and are subject to change), then click on the "Register" icon above and follow the instructions. If you need help, there is an icon at the left that will let you send me an email.
Not every BBS is for every person. If there is something here you find annoying, distasteful, or objectionable-can we please talk about it? This BBS has a Private Message system-so drop me a line and I'll see what I can do. Private means private, by the way-if I ever need to quote something communicated to me via PM I'll ask your permission before doing so, as will any Moderator.
The entry for cynosure (pronounced "sign-o-sure", and yes this means I have mispronounced it myself) from Merriam-Webster reads as follows:
Etymology: Middle French & Latin; Middle French, Ursa Minor, guide, from Latin cynosura Ursa Minor, from Greek kynosoura, from kynos oura, literally, dog's tail
1 capitalized : the northern constellation Ursa Minor; also : NORTH STAR
2 : one that serves to direct or guide
3 : a center of attraction or attention
"Where perhaps some beauty lies,
The cynosure of neighboring eyes." --Milton
We talk about all of life here, both the aspects of our personal lives that we find interesting and want to share with others, and the "bigger picture" that is the world around us. We like to laugh and we like to think.
We are a troll free site, and we hope that tradition will continue.
In regard to conduct: Act like an adult. Yes I know that is pretty vague but use your intelligence, guided by experience, to figure it out.
One of our members described Cynosure to me as a "haven of peace." This is probably one of the highest compliments we have ever received. I want to keep Cynosure that way. So there are some things that will not be tolerated:
Abusive behavior towards another member, either here or elsewhere, in public or via email/private message. Letting someone else use your account. Hacking. Cyberstalking. Spamming or Flooding the site. Masking or concealing your IP. I'm sure there are more, but those are the ones that come most readily to mind.
I reserve the right to refuse anyone membership for any reason, and explanations are optional. My primary goal is to run a safe, fun, troll free site. An example of why a person might be refused: They are a known troll from another website. (Note: I define a troll as a malicious poster who tries to hurt the feelings of others and cause heartache misery and woe, usually though not always by means of insults and calculated disrespect.)
I also feel I need to spend a moment talking about "duals" or dual identity posters. No one in Cynosure is allowed to post under more than one nickname. Should you choose to pursue that route, it is doubtful you will be posting in Cynosure under ANY nickname. Is it worth it? If you want to play those games, play them elsewhere.
On a related note, any member is welcome to post under any nickname they like, within the bounds of reason and good taste. So if you have posted for a while and then stopped or quit, and then return under a new nickname that is fine-if you tell everyone who you are. Coming back under a new nickname without saying "Hey it's me" is another mindgame we don't play here. I will not be a party to your deception and neither will the Moderators.
If you post something at Cynosure, that post is essentially yours-you may edit or delete it, or you may post it elsewhere if you like.
But the posts others make here, even if they are in response to a post you've made-those are NOT yours. You have no right to reproduce them or to summarize them in any way, for any reason. What is here, stays here.
Additionally, I feel the need to stress that the creative endeavors of those who post here are their intellectual property, whether said intellectual property is a story, essay or photograph (and this list of examples should not be considered all-inclusive.) This protection extends to the personal webspaces of Cynosurans-unless someone has expressly granted you the right to reproduce something of theirs elsewhere, don't do it.
(For the record: All contents of Cynosure are copyrighted © 2005-2007 unless otherwise noted. Contents of posts are the property of their authors and do not reflect that of the owner or staff. No material may be copied or reproduced in any way without the express written permission of the author/owner.)

There are rankings based on the number of posts a person makes. This is done in the spirit of fun-NOT competition. The ranks are:
Thinker-0 to 99 posts.
Savant-100 to 499 posts.
Scholar-500 to 999 posts.
Philosopher-1000 posts to 1999 posts.
Sage-2000 to 2999.
Genius-3000-?
If there are any ranks higher than these they have yet to be seen...
To me, free expression is the cornerstone of Cynosure. I think everyone who comes to Cynosure wants a place where they can speak without fear of derision. I hope it will always genuinely be that way.
Our staff: As of this writing Cynosure has an Administrator: Nighthawk (that's me.) It also has three Moderators: Jadzia, Justice, and Willy Stoner.
If you need any assistance, please don't hesitate to ask. Click on the links above to go to one of the staff's profile pages-from there you can send one of us a Private Message.
I do feel I need to add that this message board is not affiliated in any way, shape, or form with the on-line game Everquest.
If for some reason the system does not issue you a password when you initially sign on, please email me-again, click on the icon at the left to do so. I check my email once every day or so. If you have any other problems/issues please do not hesitate to contact me.
