So tonight I went to the first day of my Heartfelt Living class, and it was fairly uneventful. We went around the table, introduced ourselves, told how we came to be there, and then Jesse, the man who was leading the class, went into his history with Science of Mind and the whole history behind Science of Mind and New Thought (going back to Europe, before America had been colonized), which was a two-hour lecture or so.
At the beginning of the class, one woman introduced herself as Lynn *, and explained that she had gotten times mixed up in her schedule and would not be able to continue the class. She also mentioned at one point that she had flown to Honduras today, stayed 45 minutes, delivering boxes of supplies for a charity, and flown back. I had assumed she meant she had bought a ticket on a plane down there and caught the next flight back, but after she left, Jesse told us that we should Google her. So I found her Wikipedia page.
"Lynn * is the first woman to fly a Boeing 747 (SWA F/O July 2, 1980), and the first to captain the "Jumbo Jet" across the Atlantic ocean (PEX Capt. July 18, 1984). She was also part of the first all-female crew for a scheduled US carrier (with Captain Emily Jones, Air Illinois, DHC-6 Twin Otter, 12/30/1977).
This female pilot began her career in aviation as a TWA flight attendant in 1972. After taking lessons to become qualified, she became TWA's second female pilot as a Boeing 727 Flight Engineer in 1978. She has been honored with her uniform being placed in the Smithsonian Institution, being named as Woman of the Year in England (1984), and being featured in a BBC documentary, Reaching for the Skies.
Lynn and her colleague, Beverly Lynn Burns, shared the honor of creating the first all female Boeing 737 crew at People Express as co-Captains in 1982. They demonstrated the supportive effort of women helping women in the aviation field. Lynn went on to fly for Continental Airlines when People Express was merged."
Wow! I've seen this woman for a long time at my church, and I'd never known any of this! It's just funny, because it really shows that you can never judge a book by its cover. Looking at her, I would have thought she sat in a cubicle day in and day out, you know? I think one of the coolest things about all of this is that she went through her entire introduction and didn't mention any of this at all. Many people I know would try to find a way to work accomplishments like that into every single conversation.

I'll probably be happier about it when I'm not up at 11:10pm reading my homework for it. BTW, you should check out the Sunday services this month. It's a series over the Gnostic gospels (today was the gospel of Thomas, next week is Mary Magdalene), and today's was really interesting.
